Info
The Bush Wush coffee variety gets its name from the small Ethiopian town of Wushwush (sometimes spelled “Wishwish” on maps) near the famous Bonga forest in the Jimma region. It’s known for producing beautifully delicate and complex cups, which is why coffee lovers get excited whenever they see it on a label.
Originally grown by farmers in Ethiopia, Wush Wush eventually made its way to South America in the early 1990s. It’s a bit of a diva in the coffee world—yields are lower and it’s more susceptible to disease than common varieties like Caturra or Bourbon. That means it requires more care and attention from farmers, and ultimately costs more to produce. The payoff, however, is a truly special cup.
This particular coffee comes from Edward Sandoval in Tolima, Colombia. Over the past few years Edward has become known for cultivating some of coffee’s most exciting varieties, including Moka, Gesha, Chiroso—and now Wush Wush.
Before starting his own farm, Edward spent many years working as a field technician for Colombia’s Federación Nacional de Cafeteros (FNC). When he set out on his own and founded Finca Canta Ranas, he made a bold decision: instead of planting the standard varieties promoted by the FNC, he focused on rarer “exotic” cultivars that require more care but can produce exceptional, high-value coffee.
Edward’s farm is small—just three hectares—but it sits high in the mountains at around 1850 meters above sea level, where the cooler climate helps develop the complex flavors that make coffees like this so memorable.
