LIGHT ROAST
In a world of mass production farming, it’s easy to assume that all coffee is produced the same way. But in Ethiopia, it’s still a small scale, manual affair using traditional methods that go back generations. These are farmers have small plots of land, a few hectares (1 hectare = 2.5 acres) at most, and they aren’t able to grow enough coffee to bring their coffee to international markets. So these small farm owners often form cooperative groups with their neighbors to increase their combined crop size and thus their ability to bring their coffee to the market. This is how the Dannissa Farmer’s Group came to be.
Named for a local umbrella-like tree which provides shade for coffee plants, the Dannissa Farmer’s Group continues to practice old school cultivation methods: hand-picked, hand tilled and without any chemical pesticides. With the help of local export experts Sookoo Coffee, organic certification was a breeze!
